Where Love and Learning Go Hand in Hand

Welcome to the first edition of Homeschool By Design Updates!

I thought I’d share some fun stuff our family has been doing and let you know what’s new on the website.

Probably the most exciting event of our month was our quail project. We incubated 17 eggs for a 4-H Embryology project. The kids (and I) really learned what it meant to be a “mother hen” since the eggs required more attention than you might think. Hatching day was so exciting! We woke up one morning to find that six had hatched. By lunchtime, we had 15 little birds flopping around.

Speaking of 4-H, I added a section about our experience with this great program and added a link to the page for you to find out more about it. http://www.homeschool-by-design.com/4-H.html

Speaking of parenting, what about moral training? I think this aspect of homeschooling (and parenting in general) is the most important. It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children values and what the Bible says about character. Too many parents today turn their children over to youth groups for instruction on spiritual matters. Sunday and Wednesday youth meetings can’t begin to take the place of the daily instruction of a godly parent. I plan to expand this section further because I really think parents need to be encouraged in their efforts to “train a child”. http://www.homeschool-by-design.com/character.html

I would love to someday open a bookstore for homeschoolers. My husband thinks I’m crazy and suggested I work on this website instead. He said I just wanted to swap stories about great curriculum and this would be much easier. (But, it's really harder than I thought!) Anyway, I have big ideas on how to make it more interactive and get recommendations from site visitors like you. Until I can figure out that technology, I’ll just give you my thoughts on teaching different subjects and curriculum. I started with math because it seems to get the most questions – especially from new homeschoolers. http://www.homeschool-by-design.com/math.html I’ll be adding more subjects and product reviews as time allows.

Other than that, I’ve spent a lot of time proofreading and editing the current content to make it easier to read. I have added some personal details based on feedback I received last month.

As always, I appreciate your comments and I encourage you to share this site with others by forwarding this whole update or this link: http://www.homeschool-by-design.com

Time flies!! A note on future updates: I had big plans to have a monthly letter, but now think I may try for 6-8 times a year to give me more time to add content to the site. I hope that will work for you. Feel free to visit between updates!

Thanks for subscribing!
