Eclectic HomeschoolingEclectic homeschooling works for our family. If you have read about several homeschool methods and you just can't decide which you like best, this may be just the thing for you. I can always find something (although never everything) in each approach that is perfect for the goal I have in mind. A word that usually goes hand in hand with this method of homeschooling is "relaxed homeschool." I think you can have an eclectic homeschool without being relaxed, but the "relaxed" part sure makes it easier. Although they may sound similar, a relaxed, eclectic homeschooler is different from an Unschooler. The thought of being a "relaxed, eclectic homeschooler" and figuring out what works best is dauting for some people. Make a plan. Try something. If it isn't working for you or for your kids, figure out why. Then take what you know and find something that addresses the issues you were having before. We use different methods for different subjects. I am constantly tweaking something, and coming up with new ideas. I've changed curriculum more times than I care to count, often mid-year. Despite what the critics might think, this method has produced (for us and many others we know) great end of year test results (which I wouldn't even do except they are required by law) and condfident, well-rounded children.
