Extracurricular Activities4-H Clubs Compliment HomeschoolingWhen looking for extracurricular activities that compliment homeschooling check out 4-H clubs. There are a variety of different projects and events that 4Hers can do to gain knowledge and encourage young people to use their HEADs (one of the 4-H’s.) Educational Programs – During each club meeting there is time for an educational program. This can be a parent teaching a lesson they prepared or a guest coming into the group to share on his or her area of expertise. The educational program might also be a field trip. Parliamentary Procedure – Running a meeting is a great way to learn parliamentary procedure. What is a motion? Why do you move? How is a vote called for? This can be tailored to your groups age and needs. Project Records - Project records are unit studies put in report form. The members make goals, learn new information or a new skill and report and document what they learned in a Project Record Book. Many counties have competitions for these books. Presentations - Presentations are the public speaking part of 4H. Presentations are not just speeches, but include (sometimes) props, costumes, a little bit of drama and a question and answer session. It involves the members writing the content and presenting it in front of a group of their peers and judges who are experts on the topic. 4-H clubs can be organized to compliment a variety of homeschool programs and learning styles. Your local extension agent can help you start one. Check the phone book for your state's local extension office. To find out more about 4H click here.
