Homeschool Math CurriculumA Guide to Choosing the Best for Your ChildYou are in the process of choosing a homeschool math curriculum. Your son or daughter needs mathematics, and of course you want the best you program you can find - fun math activities for younger children and solid math teaching for high school students. You've tried math workbooks, Saxon, ABeka, BJU, and many other popular homeschool programs, but you and your child end up frustrated and discouraged. If you have a visual or hands on learner, you might want to consider the following: Elementary Math Mastering Mathematics At first glance, you would never believe there is enough "practice" to cement the concepts it teaches. The pages are very plain without all the unnecessary colors and distractions present in some math books. These extra stimuli create a problem for some children, especially those with ADHD. Math U See and Moving With Math are two other math programs that teach to the "right brain". Don't forget to supplement your math curriculum with games, manipulatives, pictures and stories. Times Tales is a great supplement for teaching multiplication tables. I used it with my children and years later they STILL talk about the stories and how easy they hard tables were to learn once they knew the story. I especially love this for right brained learners because it combines a visual with a story.Algebra and More Personally, I had no idea how I was going to use manipulatives for higher math. How do you use blocks to show 2x + 3y = 100? Luckily, I don't have to reinvent the wheel and neither do you. Right brain math curriculum programs for advanced topics aren't quite as common as they are for arithmetic, but they are available. Math U See starts with arithmetic and continues into higher math. Video Text Algebra was written with the right brain learner in mind. You might have success with Teaching Textbooks because of the visual teaching component on the computer. However, it wasn't the best choice for our family. Life of Fred series by Stanley Schmidt. Many reviewers say their isn't enough practice in these books. We are currently using this series and I have discovered, my right brainers don't need alot of practice. What it does have is very solid math concepts, woven into a storyline (great for RB learners) and a few challenging problems that test understanding of the concepts. (Sometimes these are VERY challenging! Know your children. Research. Test drive some different programs. You can find a homeschool math curriculum that works for your family!
