Kids Educational Games

"Brain Games" - Using Games to Teach

Games are fun and it would be nice to consider them “school,” but…

First a quiz.

What does 7 X 7 equal?

If you said 49, you’re correct! Now, think back. How did you learn your multiplication tables? If you were like me, you probably did a lot of “speed drills” (written, timed tests) and flash cards. How boring was that? If you think about it, what was the point of all those rote activities? Repetition. As far as I know, repetition is really the only way to learn some things, but why does the repetition have to be so BORING! Can learning take place without stress and tears? Yes, it can! Games are the key.

You can use games to teach material that requires repetition, and also use them to develop higher order thinking skills.

Young children learn well because they don’t realize they are “supposed to learn.” To them, learning equals play. Why does this change when they become “school aged?”

When we are homeschooling, we have a terrific opportunity to rediscover the premise of learning = play by integrating kids educational games into our routine.
