Learn at Home

Preparing Your Children

"How would you like to learn at home?" Well, that's one way of telling the kids. Once you have made a decision to homeschool, it's time to prepare the kids...

Parents aren’t the only ones who need to prepare. Even though homeschooling is becoming more common place, it is still not the status quo and children will have questions as to why they aren’t “going to school” like other kids they know.

If you have a preschool child and you plan to begin homeschooling in kindergarten, you should have a fairly easy transition. Other than the fact some of his friends may be starting school or riding the bus, your daily routine will probably remain fairly unchanged. In my opinion, kindergarten should not be an overwhelming workload of academics. Play should still rule the day. For excellent commentary on K-3 learning, read Ruth Beechick's "The 3 R's".

If your children have already been to school, or if you are considering bringing them home mid-year, the question I posed at the top of the page may be a bombshell. You should calmly explain your decision and focus on the benefits to homeschooling. Make sure you share a plan for them to continue to see their school friends if you think this may be an issue. Answer any questions they have without getting emotional. If you encounter opposition to your decision, read the section on negative reactions to homeschooling.

Make sure to allow adjustment time for children coming out of school. This is called "deschooling." You are probably anxious to start your homeschool journey, but a rule of thumb is to allow one month of adjustment time per year they spent in school. Older children may adjust faster especially if they are excited about the new arrangement. Use this time to reconnect with your child - explore their interests, play games, take field trips, test out a few favorite subjects - before you dig in to a full menu of academics.
