Mastering Mathematics

Homeschool Math Curriculum

This information on Mastering Mathematics is from the Mastery Publications website. I was able to meet the author's daughter back in 2004. She sat with me and explained the program. When I left (books in hand, I might add) I was not confident I would be able to use the program effectively, but I figured it wasn't expensive - in fact, the cost for the full K-6 program was less than many programs cost for one year - so I took a chance. You can read about our experience here.

Full math curriculum program for K-6 includes placement tests and free Math Skill Inventory; 30 learning game boards; 16 self-checking fact wheels; flash cards; manipulatives (Counting strips for all 4 basic skills; Equivalents games for time, money, measurement, metric, geometry; Go to the Bank for place value; Fraction Flips; and Fraction Picture Proofs); review games; Certificates of Achievement; erasable page protector; an easy-to-read Parent’s Manual containing additional curriculum activity suggestions, work sheets, games, answer keys; and one copy of each of the perfect bound workbooks.

Program features

Students learn one basic skill at a time - at their own pace - until it is mastered.  Skills aren’t divided into artificial, foolish tidbits (called “grade levels”).  With no jumping from skill to skill, confusion is eliminated.

Mastering Mathematics has:

Manipulatives of durable cardstock that are easily assembled. As children progress and “outgrow” them, you don’t end up with a lot of expensive, “pretty plastic”. Plus, younger children won't choke on them.

Workbooks that help your child  put his learning on paper (the place where he will demonstrate his mastery throughout life). All work pages face a blank left page so children can focus on problems they need to solve today, not yesterday's work. These consumable (and reproducible) texts have large print, allowing more room to write big answers with little hands. Most pages have no more than 20 problems - enough to master the skill, but not so many to discourage the child.

Games reinforce fact memorization, making math “friendlier”. Games are also used to teach equivalent facts for time, money, measurement, metric, and geometry terminology instead of boring work sheets.

Pretesting eliminates busy work. If your child already has some experience with a skill, you can pretest for accurate advanced placement into Mastering Mathematics. Your child saves precious learning time by “testing out” of facts and skills he has mastered and only works on areas needing improvement. Starred, optional work sheets give extra practice, if needed.  Busy work is eliminated!

Memorization is presented in manageable small groups, beginning with 3 facts.

Students reading at 2nd-3rd grade reading level can work independently. All easy-to-read directions are right on the page, eliminating the need to search through our well-written Parent’s Manual.

Parents have no late night preparation - no videos or scripts to study, no presentations to master. Lessons are clearly laid out - a page a day, the next page tomorrow. The easy-to-read directions often make this a self-directed program for the student (leaving you free to do the laundry or work with another child :-)

With the concise Mastering Mathematics Parent’s Manual’s help, you’ll have the most practical, yet flexible, math program available today, teaching the necessary skills for grades 1-6 (some kindergarten counting skills and most of 7th and 8th is also included). And you don’t pay for many unnecessary work pages covering simple, everyday skills (thermometers, change, telling time, etc.). Instead, there are many interesting, additional “step-by-step” teaching suggestions for your individual needs. Curriculum costs are very low and all necessary skills are covered.

Mastering Mathematics works with every learning style because of it's flexible nature. You can choose to:

teach a skill from start to finish or follow the page in the Parent's Manual that specifies which pages go with which grade level.

need more word problems? You get ad circulars, newspapers, and mail advertisements. Have the child write his own and supply an answer key. Have more than one child? Let them write problems for each other, appropriate to what each is learning and supply the answer key for the other child. This makes a great review for the older child.

let the children use a calculator to check their own completed work. In this way, 2 skills will be learned at once - paper/pencil work and calculator skills. Both will be necessary as an adult.

presentation can be adjusted for the child's age and attention span. Younger children do work sheets only 3 days per week (M, W, F). The other two days will be used on their fact practice game and learning an additional skill (like counting change, telling time, etc.). Special needs children can follow this schedule or be required to do less work per page (personally choosing which 2 problems per row they should do, instead of the usual 4 - get those right and you don't have to finish the page :-). Math requires about a 20 minute class.

workbook order in Mastering Mathematics can be changed - most children go from the 4 basic skills into Finishing Fractions. If your child is needs a bit more practice with multiplication and division, go into Perfecting the Point first (for a basic skill review). Then move into Fractions later.

No family is too large. Each child is taught where he is and progresses at his own pace. Children of many different ages with IQs between 138 and 47 have been taught simultaneously and successfully! Workbooks are reproducible for your immediate family, or may be purchased in an economical 6 workbook set or individually.

Practical, realistic assignments - we have no fluffy, impractical, foolish problems - only real life math. Word problems come from the Bible, everyday practical usages, and the Guinness World Book of Records. All materials are correlated with the California Achievement Test (C.A.T.) so no necessary skills are omitted.

30 day money back guarantee. Mastering Mathematics nearly 20 year history has proven its ability to teach all necessary, foundational skills.  Examine it.  If you’re not satisfied, return it in uncut, resaleable condition for a full refund (less S/H).
